Fall Kickoff & Parents' Meeting

  • WHO: All families of youth going into 6th-12th grades
  • WHAT: Our annual Fall Kickoff for Glen Mar youth ministries.
  • WHERE: Spirit Center
  • WHEN: This Sunday night, August 24, from 5:00-7:30 PM.
  • WHY: To hear about the new directions the youth ministry is moving and to learn of the many youth ministry opportunities at Glen Mar. We will give out a Fall calendar of activities, and there will be a chance for parents to sign up for dinners, sign permission slips, and sign up for the Parent Council. We will meet the adult volunteers that are working with the youth ministry, and youth will be able to sign up for the middle school retreat and other opportunities. We’ll end the evening with some cool entertainment you won’t want to miss. This is the most important meeting of the year and all youth and their families are strongly urged to attend. Each family should bring a side dish or dessert to share. Glen Mar will provide the burgers and drinks.

Lunch with the Old Man

D.C. would love to have one final time to catch up with our youth before they head off to college for the first time. He’ll pay for your lunch if you’ll call him and arrange for a day to meet for a meal before you leave town for school. Set a date now before you head out.

2009 Confirmation Class

Attention all 8t graders and older youth (and their parents): There will be an orientation meeting for all youth and parents of youth in the 8th grade or older who have not yet been confirmed. This meeting will take place THIS SUNDAY, August 24, at 11:00 AM in room 111A. We will discuss all of our plans for the 2008-09 confirmation class. We are making some big changes in the confirmation process this year, including having the class meet throughout the school year on Sunday mornings. This will be a great time to have all of your questions answered about the confirmation process. This meeting is mandatory for any youth thinking about being confirmed in 2009. Please talk to D.C. if you have any questions.

Next Week (August 31)

NO Middle School Youth Group; NO Senior High Youth Group – Enjoy your Labor Day weekend

Shoe Boxes Needed

The youth group will be participating in Operation Christmas Child in October. This is an outreach of Samaritan’s Purse ministry where groups send Christmas packages to needy children. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. Groups fill shoeboxes with small gifts (toys, school supplies, hygiene products, etc.), then wrap the boxes in Christmas paper and take them to local collection sites for shipment worldwide. Our youth will provide the gifts, but we need Glen Mar members to donate shoeboxes for our efforts. Please bring your shoeboxes to D.C. Veale at the church by November 2.

Friend-in-Faith

We are looking for adults willing to serve as a “Friend-in-Faith” for members of this year’s confirmation class. A Friend-in-Faith is a mentor, someone willing to come alongside a young person and share the journey together. You don’t need to know everything, only that you’re willing to join in the search for answers. Friends-in-Faith will meet regularly with their confirmand throughout the confirmation process in a one-on-one relationship. If you are willing to serve in this valuable role, or if you have questions, please talk to D.C. to receive a written job description.
